Ready for your summer adventure?
Were you crushed when Fenn’s treasure was discovered? Did you know about it? Back in 2018 when I first heard about Fenn’s treasure, I knew that one of the greatest treasure hunts of all time awaited my family. I was so eager to take my family on this great adventure across the Rocky Mountains. Unfortunately, those dreams came crashing down in June 2020 when the treasure was found.
For those who aren’t familiar, the Fenn treasure hunt began in 2012. Forrest Fenn, a wealthy art dealer hid a chest filled with gold and jewels estimated to be worth between $1 million and $5 million somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. He then provided a poem said to provide clues to the treasure’s exact location. It has since been revealed that the treasure was hidden inside Yellowstone National Park, but the exact location is still a secret.
The best part about Fenn’s treasure hunt was the sense of adventure we all felt. I read the poem several times, tapped into my knowledge as a geologist to try and decipher clues, and even used sophisticated mapping software to try and narrow my search areas. I would often daydream about what it would be like to actually find the treasure. At times, I even imagined that if I found it, I would leave it hidden to keep the adventure alive for others. Leaving the treasure is almost an impossible thing to imagine, but the adventure and excitement it created felt that special. I was ready for this adventure. But with a newborn and toddler at home, I needed to wait for my kids to get a little older! Although we missed the opportunity to seek Fenn’s treasure, many adventures await those ready to explore the wonders of beautiful Washington State.
But what about a treasure hunt! We are excited at GeoKidz because we get to give Washingtonians their own treasure hunt! We don’t have millions of dollars in gold and jewels to hide, but throughout this summer we will be hiding treasure chests filled with awesome GeoKidz merch, beautiful crystals and mineral samples, geodes, and more throughout Washington! Each treasure hunt will take your family on an adventure through the many geological wonders of our amazing state!
Treasure chests will be hidden in family-friendly locations (easy enough for my kids that are 2 and 6 years of age to reach) and might require a Discover Pass.
