It is amazing to consider the impacts minerals have on our daily lives and the roles they have played throughout history. I love using infographics such as this one provided by the USGS to really visualize how important minerals are, especially in our tech-driven lives!
One of my favorite minerals to illustrate this importance is chalcopyrite. As the infographic states, chalcopyrite is a source mineral for copper and copper far exceeds any other metal in a mobile device. But did you know, chalcopyrite has been the primary source of copper for thousands of years! This is awesome because not only was this mineral the foundation on which Bronze Age civilizations were built but also our modern tech-driven world! It is also significant to point out that chalcopyrite has been so important as a copper ore not because of its high copper content but because of its widespread occurrence.
There are numerous other infographics such as the above Minerals in Mobile Devices provided by the USGS and I encourage you to share these with your kids. More info can be found on the USGS Mineral Page here:
It is such a fun thought-exercise to think about where stuff comes from and the importance of mineral materials go far beyond our mobile devices! They include everything from the drywall in our homes, materials to make our bikes lighter and stronger, to how we grow and prepare our food!
